The 88 Valley

... is one of the most important Triassic areas in New Zealand.
Bounded by the Waimea Fault in the west, and the 88 Fault in the east, it provides outcrops of a range of rocks from the Kaihikuan through to the Otapirian.

​Many of the strata are fossiliferous, and brachiopods, bivalves, amonoids, anthozoa, crinoids and plant material have all been described from the area.

The Project

... is being made possible by the kind permission of the land-owner, who is providing exclusive access to the farmland for Club members.
Studies include:

• mapping the fossil distributions, rock strata and faults;
• collection and identification of the fossils; and
• a detailed reconstruction of the geological history of the area.
