The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) was awash in red during this afternoon's trading session as the KSE-100 index lost more than 1,300 points, reflecting investor caution amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over global monetary tightening.
The KSE-100 index, the main benchmark of Pakistan's stock market, traded at 173,993.33 points at 2:15 PM, down 1,335.49 points or 0.76%. This decline extends last week's weakness when the index closed 1.3% lower at 175,328.81 points.
Selling pressure was concentrated in key stocks, particularly energy and oil-related names. Shares of Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Hubco Power Company (HUBCO), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), and Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) all came under significant downward pressure. Meanwhile, banking stocks including MEBL, NBP, and UBL also did not escape the downward trend, reflecting the pessimistic sentiment sweeping across the market.
The main reason behind this decline stems from surging global oil prices. Brent crude and US WTI crude oil prices both climbed after reports emerged about the possibility of military conflict between the US and Iran. Analysts worry that if tensions at the Strait of Hormuz - the world's most important oil shipping route - continue to escalate, global oil supply could be severely disrupted.
A survey from Tehran shows Iranian authorities have made tough statements about their ability to respond to US military actions, raising concerns about a new energy crisis. Higher oil prices mean Pakistan's energy import costs - a country heavily dependent on imported oil - will surge, adding further pressure to the trade deficit and already-high inflation.
Beyond geopolitical factors, the market was also impacted by expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will continue raising interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 2.75%. This move is seen as part of efforts to curb inflation in the eurozone, but it also increases global borrowing costs, making capital flows into emerging markets like Pakistan less attractive.
Across global markets, Asian stock indices recorded significant declines during Monday's trading session. Risk-averse sentiment swept across exchanges from Tokyo, Seoul to Mumbai. US and European stock markets were also expected to open lower as investors reassess economic prospects amid expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates.
MSCI indices for emerging markets also recorded downward trends, indicating foreign capital flows are tending to exit the region. This adds further pressure on Pakistan's local currency and worsens the foreign exchange scarcity the South Asian nation is facing.
Analysts believe today's trading session shows the Pakistani market is entering a deeper correction phase after a period of gains. The KSE-100 losing the important psychological support level around 175,000 points could open the door for deeper corrections in coming sessions.
However, some experts suggest the current decline could present buying opportunities for long-term investors, particularly in banking and energy stocks which have sound fundamentals. Historical data shows the Pakistani market tends to recover strongly after correction phases triggered by geopolitical factors once stability returns.
In the short term, market movements will depend heavily on signals from the potential conflict in the Middle East and policy decisions from major central banks. If tensions are contained and the ECB delivers a dovish message, the market could recover quickly. Conversely, if the situation deteriorates, the KSE-100 could test lower support levels in the coming weeks.
Investors are advised to closely monitor oil price movements, geopolitical developments, and macroeconomic indicators to make appropriate adjustments to their investment portfolios.
