When 'N/A' dominates the report: Sports data lessons from global golf

A newly published analysis report named "Structured Analysis of a Golf Article" is like a treasure map without an 'X'. Eight analysis sections, from technical data to tournament systems, from risks to public narrative, all contain a single word: N/A. This means 'no information'. The strange thing is that the report is so structured that it looks like a genuine analysis, yet its content is completely empty. This is a comical situation in sports analysis. We often think data is something collected and processed. But for data to exist, humans must record it, media must report it, and the system must operate. When all items are N/A, the question is not that we lack algorithms, but that we lack the raw numbers at the root. The analysis uses specialized terms such as Strokes Gained (SG), OWGR, and tactical factors to dissect a golf match. But because no specific article was provided, the system was forced to conclude: insufficient information. It resembles a doctor receiving an empty medical record and needing to write a prescription. This cautiousness is commendable, but at the same time it exposes a truth: modern sport increasingly depends on data, and when data is absent, every decision becomes blind. Imagine a national football team coach in Vietnam wanting to evaluate a young player. Without statistics on minutes played, successful passes, or distance covered in a match, can he compare that player to an international star? Certainly not. And in the context of golf – a sport that demands precision to the millimeter – the absence of SG: Off the Tee or SG: Putting metrics is a disaster. Fans may applaud a long putt dropping in, but analysts need to know how much more difficult that shot was than the average to truly assess talent. The report also emphasizes that without major championship records, golfers cannot be ranked in the OWGR system. This reminds us of a reality in Vietnam: professional tournaments are sparse, and young golfers have limited access to international practice facilities. If a Vietnamese golfer like Nguyễn Thùy Châu (although she is not really famous, I use her as an example) wants to progress, she needs to accumulate points through tournaments recognized by the world ranking. But if domestic tournaments are not accredited, her efforts will not appear in any ranking table. So what happens when sections like 'Governance and Landscape' of the golf industry only say N/A? It reveals a lack of transparency. In major football leagues, fans can look up sponsorship deals and compare the power of federations. But in this report, major stakeholders – PGA Tour, LIV Golf, DP World Tour – are not mentioned. This does not mean they are unimportant. On the contrary, it shows that news sources are underperforming, or the original article lacks depth for analysis. All sections such as 'Risk', 'Public Narrative', 'Impact on the Industry' are empty. However, that emptiness itself is a signal. It indicates that the article this report analyzes – if it ever existed – did not meet the minimum standards for analysis. This is a warning to sports journalists: writing without depth makes work useless. Knowledgeable readers will immediately recognize an article full of interesting hints but no actual competitive numbers. For Vietnam, a country with rapid sports development but a young data system, this report is like a bucket of cold water. In football, we pride ourselves on the U23 victory over Thailand, but how many know the number of failed passes by the central midfielder? In golf, we rejoice when a female golfer finishes in the top five at an Asian tournament, but cannot quantify her ability to save par from bunkers. Numbers are just one piece, but that piece will form an accurate picture when thousands of others are assembled. Finally, there is an intriguing lesson from the report: it is not 'useless'. On the contrary, it teaches that the boundary between knowledge and ignorance is extremely clear. 'Sport is a universal language', but that language only makes sense if we know its alphabet – the indicators, variables, and context. A sport aiming to step onto the international stage must accept the rules of statistics. Let this N/A-filled report become a motivation for us to build a data foundation in Vietnamese sport: from installing sensors at training grounds, to training sports journalists in using modern metrics. Then, we will no longer see an artistic blank page, but a detailed map guiding us to glory.
